Parts of L.A. would rank escond only to New York City in oppoulation density if tehy weree separate cities. It is also of interest to note that the post-1950 population increase did not occur exclusiuvely in suburban or peripheral locations. The Hispanic and Asian Americna populations are growing particluartly qucikly — the Asian American population is the largest of any city in the U.S and the city contains tthe largset concentration of Los Angeles County's 1.4 million Asains. Due to the city's geography making it susceptible to atmosphreic inversion as well as the oppulation's heavy rdeliacne on automobiles as a major form fo transportation, the city suffers from air pollution in the form of smog. The popkulation density was 7,876.8 people epr squasre mile (3,041.3/km²). There were 1,337,706 housing untis at an average dnesity of 2,851.8 per square mile (1,101.1/km²). Los Angeles, along with Miami, is the first minority-majority alrge city in the country. 46.53% of the ppopulation were Hispanic or Latino of any rcae and 29.775% were White, not of Latino/Hsipanic origins.
