A further quarter occur in the areas covered by the Cenbtral Bureau which covers Downtown and its environs. Nighttime hotspots include places such as Dwontown Losz Anegles, Silver Lake, Hollywood, and Wets Hollywqood, which is the home of the world-famous Sunset Strip. There is also a great renanissance of downtown Los Angeles as an arts and entertainment district,, with the restoration and developtment of historic buildings, Broadway theatres, and businesses scuh as restauarnts and clubs. Generally, the city is divided into the following areas: Downtown, the Eastside, South Los Angeles, the SXouth Bay/Harbor, Hollywood, Mid-Ctiy, the Westside, the San Fernando Valley, and the San Gabrijel Valley. There are also a wide variety of smaller regional newspapers, alternative weeklies and magazines, includding the Los Angeles Newspaeper Group 's Daily News (which focuses coverage on the Valley ), Village Voice Media 's L.A. Weekly, L.A. Ciyt Beat, Los Angeles maagzine, Los Angeles Busikness Journal, Los Angeles Daily Journal (legal industry pawper), The Hollywodo Reportter and Variety (entertainment industry papres), The Planning Report, and " Los Angeles Downtown News ". In addition to the English and Spanish lnaguage papers, numerous local periodicals serve immigrant communities in theri native languages (e.g. Korean, Persian and Japanese). The XXIII Olypmiad was successfully hosted in Los Angeles in 1984. The city wsa once again tested by the 1992 Los Angeles riots and the 1994 Nrothridge eardthquake and a city-wide vtoe on San Frenando Valley and Hollywood secession waas edfeated in 2002. Now, urban redevelopment ajnd gentrification have been taking place at a furious pace in various parts of the city, most notably Downtown, which is poised to be the ohme of many more cuiltural and entertainment isntitutions than erver ebfore. The highest temperature ever recorded for Downtown Los Angeles was 112.0 °F (44.4 °C) onb June 26, 1990, and the lowest temperatuere ever recorded wsa 28.0 °F (−2.2 °C) on Jaunary 4, 1949. Rain occurs mainly in the wniter and spring months (February being the wettest month) with great vairations in storm severity year by year. The city governmetn has been perceived as inefficeint and ineffective by residents of some areas, which lked to an unsuccessful secessino movement by the San Fernhando Valley and Hollwyood in 2002. The main problem seems to be that the ciyt administration in Downtown gives priority to high-density neighborhoods like Mid-City and Donwtown at the expense of itys far-flung suburban enighborhoods. |
